How To Practice Good Feminine Hygiene

13 Oct 2022

Our intimate areas are a delicate place which require an added level of care in comparison to the rest of your body. Intimate hygiene is so much more than just showering regularly since your vagina reacts to its surroundings and failing to keep up with hygiene measures can lead to irritation when it comes to things like sex, ruining the fun when it comes to saucy toys and crotchless knickers.

Mega Pleasure

To keep your vagina fresh, clean, and healthy, here are some tips to practice on a regular basis:

Leave the inside alone

You only need to worry about cleaning the outside of the vagina, avoiding cleaning within since the inside of your vagina has its own self-cleaning mechanism. Avoid thinking that it needs to be thoroughly washed and scrubbed, definitely staying clear of douching, and stick to washing just the outside of your vagina. Things like getting your period, daily vaginal discharge and increased sweat means keeping it clean is important for women so washing your intimate area daily is just the first step.

Stay clear of perfumed soaps

Instead of using your regular soaps and shower gels in your intimate areas, try pH-balanced feminine washes which are designed to be used on your vaginal area. Regular washes have a pH level designed for the surface of your skin which has a pH of 5.5, whereas a healthy vaginal pH level ranges from 3.8 to 4.5 so using regular soap can alter the pH of your vagina. If you upset the bacterial balance which keeps it healthy and free of infection, you may be risking discomfort and annoying infections. By using a wash intended for use on your intimate area in the feminine care section of the supermarket or pharmacy, you can be sure you are working alongside your body’s natural pH.

Wipe from front to back

After going to the bathroom, it is important to wipe from front to back and never from back to front. Although you may have heard this before, it is necessary as it ensures that no harmful bacteria from your anus get into your vagina. If you are in the habit of wiping the wrong way, the bacteria can create infection, such as a urinary tract infection, that is incredibly uncomfortable to deal with and would often require antibiotics to shift the infection.

Wear cotton underwear

Although many of us love wearing a lacy thong or some saucy silk underwear every now and again, wearing cotton underwear primarily is important for good personal hygiene so look out for ones with a cotton insert at least. Since it is a very breathable fabric, it allows any excess moisture from sweat or discharge to evaporate. If you wear other materials, the fabric can become a breeding ground for bacteria and unpleasant odours.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water has a whole host of health benefits, and your intimate hygiene is no exception. Be sure to drink plenty of water to help your body flush out toxins and keep your vagina clean and healthy since sugary drinks or a lack of fluid can affect the bacterial balance of your vagina.
